Our play yard is where kids come together every day to stay active, build friendships, and create lasting memories. From pickup basketball games to group activities, this space plays a vital role in our members’ daily experience.
Thanks to a generous $20,000 commitment from The Cheng Family Foundation, in honor of Hans Laroche and Erik Vasquez, every dollar donated will be matched to double your impact.
As Laguna Beach locals whose three children attended the Boys & Girls Club, Jen and Cliff understand firsthand the impact the Club has on young lives and are helping ensure today’s members have the same opportunity to learn, grow, and create lasting memories.
Current State of the Play Yard
The play yard is used constantly, but key elements are no longer meeting the needs of our members.
The basketball hoops are old and rusted, and the rims can no longer properly hold nets in place. In some cases, temporary fixes like zip ties have been used just to keep the game going. The court surface has also worn down over time, creating an environment that no longer reflects the high-quality space our kids deserve.
These conditions make improvements essential to ensuring a reliable place for our members to play and grow.
A Message from Our Sports Director
“My name is Erik Vasquez, and I serve as the Sports and Recreation Director. I’ve had the privilege of being on staff for 18 years, but my connection to this club goes back even further—I was a Club kid myself from 1999 to 2007.
Some of my favorite memories growing up here were spent on the playground basketball courts, playing with friends, staying active, and building lifelong connections. It’s incredibly meaningful to now see our current members enjoying those same experiences today—laughing, competing, and making memories of their own on those very courts.
However, our basketball hoops are in urgent need of replacement. While the spirit of the game is still strong, the equipment no longer reflects the high-quality environment our kids deserve.
We are reaching out to ask for your support in raising funds to improve our play yard and ensure that our members can continue to enjoy this space for years to come.”
More Than Just a Play Yard
As the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach approaches its 75th anniversary, our play yard represents decades of memories, connection, and growth for the kids we serve. To continue that legacy, this space is ready for meaningful improvements.
What was once considered a “nice to have” project has become a priority. The current basketball hoops are worn down, with rusted components and rims that can no longer properly hold nets—often requiring temporary fixes just to stay usable. These limitations impact how kids engage with one of our most popular activities.
As we look ahead to 75 years of service, this is an opportunity to invest in a space that has meant so much to our community. Upgrading the play yard will help ensure it remains a vibrant, active place where kids can play, connect, and build confidence for years to come.
Needs
In our 75th year of serving the community, the need to improve our play yard has become increasingly clear. Years of daily use have taken a toll on the space, and what was once a reliable area for recreation is ready for meaningful updates to better serve today’s members.
Key improvements include replacing worn and outdated basketball hoops, installing a new, durable court surface, and making additional upgrades to enhance the overall play experience for youth.
